Our First Work of HeART - By Dennis Hetu
Updated: Dec 7, 2019
Dennis Hetu – Artist, Carver, Instructor at Toquaht Nation, Ucluelet, BC
Dennis Hetu designed and carved this beautiful totem to honour his late grandfather & five sons. The community involvement in this project was immense – people within and the surrounding areas took part, supported and helped make this project possible.
I asked Dennis what his totem represents:
“The Thunder bird represents our nation as a whole - it is our Toquaht emblem. The killer whale or Kakawin, represents family strength and unity. The bear represents, strength and guardianship; they are protectors. The wolves represent family and prosperity as a clan or family, working together - fighting to survive together.”
