Works of HeART Show - "We Cannot Go Back"
Updated: Dec 7, 2019
This Vancouver Island-based group has joined forces with the Nanaimo Arts Council to host an impactful, multimedia art exhibition called the ‘Works of HeART Show’. This is no ordinary exhibit. It comes with a powerful reminder that racism and intolerance are still prevalent today and must be continually challenged.
“Art can be a catalyst for social change,” says project founder, Micki Findlay. It can push boundaries and break down barriers caused by ignorance and fear. We do not need more walls – we need more understanding.”
The premise of this dynamic exhibit is based on Chief Dan George’s quote; “The heart never knows the colour of the skin.” A tribute to ‘Universal Human Rights Month’, it celebrates equality, diversity and multiculturalism, through an eclectic blend of art, music and video.
In the spirit of inclusiveness, the public is invited to be part of the exhibit by painting a heART on the gallery wall! You may also vote for your three favourite art pieces and, thereby, help the artists win prizes for their work.
The exhibition runs from December 4 to January 6, Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, at the 78 Wharf Street Gallery in Nanaimo. It will be a ‘Christmas gift’ to the public, so admission will be free – from their heart to yours.
Findlay adds; “Art is one of the few things that can connect us all; no matter who we are, where we are from, or what we believe. Can you imagine what could happen if we all chose to use our talents to translate a message of kindness, tolerance and inclusion? That, to me, is art at its finest.”
If you are interested in discovering more about the show and this creative, humanitarian project, while meeting the artists, enjoying a theatrical performance and multicultural music, you are invited to an Opening Reception on Friday, December 7, from 6 to 8 pm at the gallery. (Corner of Commercial and Wharf Street underneath Mon Petit Choux Bakery.) The ‘HeART Wall’ will up by then for anyone wanting to contribute their own design! Food and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to email@example.com by December 3rd.
All of the art, (and the HeART wall), will be featured in a film WOH is producing to inspire people to make a difference with creativity. Their goal is to show the film to schools, youth groups, organizations and on social media. If you would like to help with the production costs of the film, go to: gofundme.com/hearts-are-needed
Also, ‘Christmas Angels’ are needed to help keep the 78 Wharf Street Gallery doors open so they can continue providing cultural richness to our community. The NAC greatly appreciates the community’s help.
