Aviv - Spreading Happiness With Her Art
Updated: Nov 18, 2019
Her name is Aviv Talya Dekel and her business is spreading happiness. Our world needs more people like her. Although shy, she is kind, empathic and has a smile for everyone she meets. She is also incredibly creative, multi-talented and a motivated entrepreneur.
Aviv is the creator of 'Aviv's Happy Crafts' - specializing in joyful, unconventional folk-style art that incorporates needlepoint and colouring. She spends two hours a day working on her craft and sells her work at local markets, primarily in the Sidney and Saanich. BC area.
Aviv started to sell her artwork ten years ago, alongside her family's farm produce. Eventually, she began selling her work at local craft fairs and Christmas markets. Now, her art is on display in various venues, such as the Spiral Café in Vic West, where she will be premiering in her first ever solo show through the month of July, 2019.
Now twenty-two years old, Aviv has faced many major challenges in her life, but nothing seems to stop her from following her passions. Diagnosed with down syndrome, Aviv also had heart surgery at three months old. At twelve, she developed type one and two diabetes. At thirteen, her right hand stopped growing and her right arm began to lose strength and the bones started to deform, as well as her right foot. She still continues to lose range of motion and strength, but by continuing to use her right hand for sewing and colouring, she may be able to keep the use of her hand, hopefully, for a longer period of time.
Aviv's Happy Crafts include unique and original needlepoint pictures and doorhangers, vibrant hand-coloured heart greeting cards and photo cards, needlepoint magnets and handmade, braided yarn, accent scarves. No two creations are exactly alike and each one is made with love, joy and attention to detail, while drawing a smile from all who see them.
Aviv is more than an artist... she is also a dancer, swimmer, athlete, equestrian and actress. She participated in the special Olympics rhythmic gymnastics competition for Vancouver island this March. On May10, she will be in the Karen Clark year end show with her hip-hop group at the U Vic Farquhar auditorium. Aviv is also involved in speech therapy. With all that, she still finds time to give back to her community by volunteering at St Vincent de Paul Thrift shop and Sassy's Restaurant.
Meet Aviv - the folk artist behind the amazing artwork available from Aviv's Happy Crafts
Aviv is a remarkable young woman who continues to be an inspiration of strength, determination, hard work and passion. And, best of all, she likes to make people happy, hence, 'Aviv's Happy Crafts'. She wishes she could have magic so she could "make all the bad guys in the world be nice." And she "really wants to fire Trump because he is a bully and he is not taking care of the world." Hmmm... seems she is also a very perceptive young lady.
Aviv has her work in several venues and upcoming craft fairs...
The Coast Collective gallery in Langford for a show called Bloom 11, Mar 13 through 31 March.
The Peninsula Farm Market in June at the Saanich Fairground almost every Saturday, 9 am to1pm.
Sidney Street Market on Thursday evenings, 5:30 - 8:30 pm on June 20, July 4, Aug 22.
Art and Music in the Garden: Horticultural Centre of the Pacific in Saanich, August 10 and 11th.
Craft fair at the Patio Gardens Nursery on July 13.
Aviv just sold two of her pieces at the ArtSea Small Expressions show... her first Gallery sales! She was very excited and "hopes to get famous enough to meet and dance with the Wiggles from Australia."
On top of everything, Aviv is working on a film about people with disabilities. I'm inspired. Are you? "Thank you Aviv for helping to make the world a happier, kinder, more inclusive place"... which is why she and her mom, Miki, contacted Works of HeART Project - they believe in what we are about and they want to help spread our message.
