It's All About Caring and Sharing
Updated: Nov 18, 2019
My name is Colline Collins and caring and sharing is my purpose in life, and has been since the mid 80's. I'm a senior of 70 years old and in pretty good health so far, and I’m grateful for that.
In 2016 I started volunteering with a group called the 'Breakfast Club' which cooks a breakfast on the 1st and 5th Saturday of every month here in Nanaimo, BC. Operating from the 7-10 Club, we serve many street people and those in need of a meal. The 7-10 Club also does a breakfast every morning, Monday through Friday.
I then began volunteering with the Nanaimo Street Store. We collect clothing and bedding and randomly select a place to set up our tables and umbrella tents where we give everything away for free… again to those in need.
I also volunteer a couple of days a week with a group called Wisteria Community Association, which is currently doing a "Stone Soup". I'm a prep cook and we make 2 different kinds of soup and a sandwich or bun to give out every evening between 6 and 10pm, outside at 150 Nicol Street. Monday night, there were 175 people served... last night there were 165.
What I decided to do was collect and fill old purses with donated trial size shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, tooth brushes, feminine hygiene products, etc. I will distribute these purses when we do a street store with some going to Samaritan House here in Nanaimo. Samaritan House provides emergency shelter for women in crisis. I see so many homeless women and women in need, as well as families living in vehicles....and it's getting worse.
After I have this underway, I intend to start this for men as well - providing necessity items to the homeless and those in need. Instead of purses, I will fill pencil cases I will purchase from the Dollar Store.
My heart feels their pain. It’s all about caring and sharing...
